Frequently Asked Questions


The following are a list of frequently asked questions about this year's competition, however please be sure to CAREFULLY read the rules to ensure your submission is not disqualified. 



In last year's competition we were required to incorporate the 3ds Max logo.  Do we need to do that this year?

No, this year we are not requiring the inclusion of the 3ds Max logo.

Can I submit existing images?

Yes, as long as they were created using 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design 2012 or later.

Do I need to design a new scene for this competition?

You can if you like, however there is no requirement for this.  You can also submit existing images that you have done.

Can I use third party rendering software to render my image?

Yes, as long as the rendering software is a plugin for 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design. (Examples are: V-Ray, Maxwell Render, finalRender etc.)

Which software can I use?

To participate you must submit an image created with Autodesk® 3ds Max® 2012 or Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design 2012 software or newer.  Modeling produced outside of 3ds Max must be created using Autodesk software, or plugins designed to support or augment modeling in Autodesk software. There are no restrictions on post-production applications used to finalize the final rendered image.

Is this only an architectural competition?

No, this year there are three categories for the competition. Each submission must fit into one of the three available categories: "Buildings": architecture, building engineering, construction; "Transportation": Roads/Highways, Rail, Airports, Ports/Harbors;  and "Product Design": Consumer Products, Industrial Machinery, Automotive and Aerospace Vehicles, Building products and goods.

Can I model interior scenes for the competition?

Yes, both interior and exterior architectural scenes fit into the "Buildings" category.

What if I'm not using 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design 2012 or later?

If you do not currently own or use 3ds Max or 3ds Max Design software, you can download a free 30-day trial version. Student Participants can download 3ds Max Design  from the Autodesk Education Community.
